These were herbs and vegetables, often from far away. In 1845 the Medico-Chimique society of Paris received permission from the French government to translate and publish Van Rheedes Musa Sanctae Clarissensis. Malayalam workers had their first access to Van Rheede s work on Musaceae and began to spread the knowledge of Musa among the native people of Kerala.
This was how Van Rheede s work on Malayalam reached the wilds of Kerala. And when the first English version of his Musa sanctae clarissensis was published in 1830, it was made available for people like Manilal to study. It was a stepping stone towards the formation of a Malayalam speaking scientific community.
Manilals enduring curiosity for the Musaceae and for the Malayalam language naturally led him to the Hortus Malabaricus. Manilals love for Hortus sparked his lifelong interest in botany. He took pleasure in collecting and studying plant life. Within four years of his embarking on a life of scholarly pursuits, Manilal became a professor of Latin and Botany at the Cochin College. Before long Manilal added Malayalam to his list of academic interests.
Three months after the visit, Van Rheede, with Achuden and other scholars present, received a document from the Palace written in the Malayalam language. It ran to several pages and stated how Van Rheede and his secretary had succeeded in collecting several plants in the area where he was staying. It noted how accurate Van Rheedes notes and his encyclopedic knowledge of the local flora of Kerala and added how he and his staff were in the process of compiling a book on the plants of the area.
He had a bumper crop of a few species that struck Manilal as new or rare. The bee orchid ( Mesona deplanatana) was such a find. The plant was reported by Linnar in his book on the flora of Malabar, but Hortus was the first time it was described in Kerala. And of the 69 locations mentioned in its text, which included an abundance of native medicinal plants, Mesona deplanatana was found at only one. 66 He also reported the first individual of the wild form of Hibiscus sabdariffa. Known botanically as Hibiscus rosa sinensis, it was previously known as kattakkutty, and native to southern China, Laos and Vietnam.
The story of Malwiyas discovery of Piper kadsura, or kadsura, as he knew it, is interesting. The plant bears small lobed fruits, which have yet to be published. The fruits are used in Chinese traditional medicine to cure throat aches. Professor Manilal, who knew that the word translated as plant in Malayalam was in fact fruit, tracked down every known variety of the plant and published a botanical monograph on it, introducing it to the world. Manilal had already noted that the Kerala people used its resin to make ropes and twine. 67 In almost 30 years, he documented more than 12,000 plants of the region and made important economic and medicinal contributions.
But the study of Malayalam is the next leg of his work, he says. His grandfather was a well-read man and his name was well-known in Malayalam. So, his grandson has embarked on a project to compile an annotated dictionary of Malayalam botany, to be published soon.
