So just what are these people really doing when they gi, and why does each person come to each of these different aikido schools? Does the term “Do” mean go into a dojo or an aikido class? Well, the terms does and do are a metaphor of the different levels of understanding of what is being done. The dojo is a place where students learn the basics. To practice aikido, I need a place where I can practice. I do not go to a dojo in a suit and tie. I need a place where I can practice. The dojo or aikido class is like a gym. We sweat. We create tension. We avenge our bodies and the body language of our opponents. The dojo is a place of adversity. It is real to our bodies. What matters is the experience that each of us is having. Some people go to yoga classes because they want to get into shape. Some want to do a demonstration to look good to their friends. Some just go to meet new people. But the dojo is not about what we do, it is about how we do it. If we go to a dojo to meet new people, the dojo is designed to work for those people in the same way that a hospital is designed for patients. In the same way that we are eager to learn from a hospital, we are eager to learn from the dojo. The dojo, like a hospital, is a place of getting to know each other.
